The new scheme will likely cost the state exchequer Rs 5,200 crore annually. Along with the existing subsidy - ranging from Rs 300 to Rs 750 - that remains open for anyone unwilling to opt for free power, the combined financial load is expected to be Rs 7,000 crore. "The total number of domestic electricity consumers in the state is 1.24 crore. Among them, there are 1.04 crore consumers who use less than 100 units a month," a senior official said.
