Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje faces not just anti-incumbency but also the state's political history for the last quarter of a century. No chief minister has managed to come back to power in Rajasthan since the late Bhairon Singh Shekhawat in 1993. Since then, power has alternated between Congress and BJP every five years. Despite a string of by-poll losses over the past few years, Raje is banking on several welfare schemes to deliver political dividends. A confident Raje has promised 50 lakh jobs over the next five years and an unemployment allowance of Rs 5,000 to eligible youth over 21 years of age. But is this too little too late or will a late surge by BJP help them defy history?
