The Centre and Gujarat state have defended their decision to release 11 convicts in the Bilkis Bano case, pleading that they did not commit a "rarest of rare crime," and should be allowed to reform and reintegrate at society. However, the Supreme Court asked why the remission policy was applied selectively and why convicts in a similar position continue to remain in jail.
